Damnit.

SPIKE TV has decided not to renew Blade: The Series for another season. This might sound silly, but Blade was, at times, quite a good show, completely different from what I expected, and the only thing I looked forward to on TV all this year (with the exception of The Colbert Report and certain Charlie Rose interviews, of course). Even though the series had reasonable numbers for something on a specialty channel (1 million+ viewers), and received far more favourable reviews than any of the Blade movies (!), it attracted too many females and too few males than what SPIKE's marketing team needed to sell the male-oriented advertising the network is geared for. In any case, New Line Cinema is apparently still behind the show "100%", and Blade may find a home on another network soon enough. If you watched, and liked, do send an email to the chaps in charge, buy the DVD when it comes out, and keep your fingers crossed.

6...thoughts from my fellow Saturnalians:

  • I respect you less because of this post.

    Blade? Really? C'mon.

  • Yes! It was a good show! Don't pay attention to the ads. Every once in a while there would be some fighting, but for the most part the show was all dialogue and plot. The problem here was Spike wanted an action show, and instead they got a drama about vampires who double-cross each other. I think the writers knew that Blade (the character) was sort of silly, so they literally put all the other characters in the show way more often.

  • I too am shocked, C-Lar. I only saw the first movie, but I thought (personally) that it was poorly written (why off his Mom in the first one? Anyone can tell you that's for part three...) Anyway, sorry your fave show is off, hope it returns elsewhere.

My friend is starting a new internet series with the screenwriter of the Blade movies - not sure if he is involved with the show, but don't think so. Anyway, when it happens I'll let you know. (I don't even know what it's about at this point)

Wha - ? Really? I just noticed this. Wow, maybe it really was better than the first movie (I skipped 2 and 3, to be honest...)

  • Jason: the main character of the series was basically a female ex-soldier from Iraq whose brother is killed by a vampire overlord (although played by Jill Wagner... so I guess the U.S. military is filled with FHM models). Anywhoo, she goes on a revenge thing and tries to kill the overlord (a charming Brit, played by Neil Jackson, who was probably a geek in high school); instead he ends up turning her into a vampire. They share some kind of bizarre memory bond, so while she hates his guts, she mostly falls in love with him too. Plus, he's already got a blonde australian with him who gets jealous. And she hates needing to drink blood to stay alive. So it's basically a soap opera -- meanwhile Blade runs around in a few scenes and kills some things. It really should have been called the "Jill Wagner and Neil Jackson get angry and then have sex and then double-cross each other while wearing Armani and discussing how much it sucks to have to suck blood" show. :)

  • Hmmmmm... and a guy named "Blade" does show up? Now and then?

Just buggin' ya. Hope you get to see it again.
