A few points of thought
1. Check out this line from a John Ivison article in today's National Pest:
Just evicted an orphanage??!! Really?? I'm thinking John "Ivison" might actually be John Ibbitson's evil, less-articulate (but more-entertaining) twin.
2. My friend John sent me this, care of Bruce MacKinnon at The Halifax Herald. It is, especially in light of this photo, quite funny:
...and, on a related note...
3. Bob Woodward of Watergate and All The President's Men fame will be on Charlie Rose for a whole hour tonight (no commercials!), no doubt blaming Donald Rumsfeld for 99% of the U.S.'s current woes in Iraq. Oh, and he's probably abut 99% right, too. Check it out.
But there is little doubt that whether it is now or on the second ballot, Brison will back Ignatieff. If he does reach this conclusion, the Stockwell Day comparisons will disappear from memory like snow on a river. Brison, freshly ensconced as Ignatieff's new economic point man, will wax lyrical about how his new boss is the Canadian Kissinger, while Ignatieff will flash his malevolent grin -- the one that makes him look like he's just evicted an orphanage.

11...thoughts from my fellow Saturnalians:
Caught that Woodward interview - pretty good overall, except that Rose couldn't seem to drop the "why aren't you reporting daily" thing.
Also, finally, meatloaf, fuck:
Court rules N.S. Sunday shopping law invalid
Last Updated: Wednesday, October 4, 2006 | 1:31 PM AT
CBC News
The Sobeys and Atlantic Superstore grocery chains have won their court challenge of Nova Scotia's Sunday shopping regulations.
A court ruling released Wednesday said the provincial government went beyond its powers with regulations introduced in June that prevented the grocery stores from selling products all seven days of the week.
Shortly after Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Peter Richard issued the ruling, Premier Rodney MacDonald said he would clear the way for wide-open Sunday shopping.

Wow, I really wish I'd caught this yesterday so I could've seen that Woodward interview - that would be terrific watching.

LARUE - have you seen the pic I have with Bubbles (moonlighting as Mike Smith)? It's on my MSN space - at the end of Amy & Craig's wedding album.

First off, great post.
Second, Rumsfeld isn't in charge of Afghanistan.
Third, Woodward's books are always great but I feel this one is a little cheap. Not because he is inaccurate, but because he's written two books already that are very friendly to the Bush White Hosue (including one on Iraq) and he was involved in the Valerie Plame debacle and got a lot of flack for being a Bush-Crony.... SOOO he set out to write this book to distance himself away.
I love Woodward and I think he is correct with this book, but the reasons why he wrote it kinda make it cheap.

Riley: you're totally correct, although in this case it may simply be that Mr. Woodward has become legitimately increasingly disappointed with the Bush administration.
On Rumsfeld, by extension he's *technically* more-or-less responsible for the U.S. operation in Afghanistan (and therefore, before a few days ago, the entire operation), being the Sec. of Def. and all. *Operationally* this is not the case.
Jason: you can actually watch the entire interview for free right at www.charlierose.com.
Aims: great photo! Did you check out the one with Li on this page? It looks photoshopped, but its not.

THANKS C-Lar!!! I will watch it tonight for SURE!
btw, I don't get the cartoon - I've been trying to figure it out. Is the man someone famous that makes it funny? Or is it just the CSA Approved badge that makes it funny? The glasses make me wonder if it's Bob Rae, but that doesn't make any sense...?

Jason: that's bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys.
What are you, from Upper Canada College or something? ;)

OHHHHHH
To be honest, it's mostly the hair I recognize him by, which is all covered up.
I've never seen Trailer Park Boys, lol. I know it's huge, but I don't really have tv.
Anyhoo, thanks.

I've read the first 200 pages of the new Woodward book, and it's pretty scathing on Rumsfeld's attitude and behaviour in the run-up to the War. He's portrayed as a domineering micro-manager of just about everything happening in the Pentagon, the planning for post-Saddam Iraq, and everything else imaginable. I've found myself shaking my head at some of things said & done by Rummy and other admin folks, as there were some pretty clear "moments" that they managed to miss when it came to the occupation phase. Good read, and I recommend it.

Christ Rich, did you just use the word "occupation"?
Won't that make you melt or something??
;)
